Ouh! là! ...je m'oublie...
Je suis de retour dans le Waikato, où la pluie ne cesse que rarement. Il fait moins soleil et moins chaud que dans le Canterbury (la 'région'/province de Christchurch), et pourtant la saison maraîchère doit bien avoir 3-4 semaines d'avances. Allez comprendre...

Yet more strawberries on a sandwich
I'd made meringues with egg whites left over from Saturday night's quiche - they've been in the oven, on & off on 'low + fan bake' since yesterday because of course I chose the two most humid days of the year so far to make meringue. I'd also made pineapple sorbet because I couldn't resist buying one at $1,69 at the Funky Pumpkin, then remembered I really can't eat more than a couple bites fresh pineapple before my tongue goes all numb.
I ask you, what could be better on a hot, humid day with assault rifle-armed policemen in the yard, than an ice cream sandwich? With balsamic strawberries on top?
update: apparently, the police caught the guy, but it's too late to make it to the university and get anything done before the library closes - I'll be working from home tonight.
Recipes:
Meringue:
- 3 eggs
- 100g caster sugar
- dash of balsamic vinegar (it works like cream of tartar to stabilize the meringue, and gives it a little twang)
1. Heat oven to 110ºC
2. beat the egg whites until soft peaks, gradually add the sugar and a dash of balsamic vinegar, continuing to beat until thick and glossy.
3. Place big spoonfuls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, bake for 45 minutes, then cool in the switched-off oven for at least 4 hours.
Sorbet:
- a little more than 3 cups fruit, peeled and cut in pieces (to get 3 cups puréed) - I had 2 and-a-half cups pineapple and a half-cup apricots*
- 150-250g caster sugar (or fruit sugar in North America)
- juice of one lemon.
1. Purée the fruit, add sugar and lemon juice, mix well. The taste should be a little too sweet - once frozen it will be just right.
2. Put in an ice-cream machine (follow instructions for the machine) or in a tupperware in the freezer, shaking every hour or so to break ice crystals (my preferred technique).
* to peel apricots, cut a small cross at the top, put in a bowl, cover with boiling water for 30 seconds, drain and cover with cold water for a minute. The skin should come right off.

Linwood lives up to its reputation (update: with assault rifles and all...)
Il y a un policier, armé, veste-pare-balle-é, et accompagné d'un chien de police (superbe berger allemand) dans ma cours. Apparemment, il y a "une petite opérations à quelques portes d'ici".... d'après ce que j'ai pu comprendre, il monte la garde au cas où le sujet de cette 'petite opération' ne tente de s'enfuir pardessus les clôtures.
15 minutes plus tard: les forces spéciales viennent de me dire de m'éloigner de la fenêtre et de rester dans une des pièce du fond de la maison. Okaayyyy...

Sandwich party: the morning after*
Inspired in part by the enthusiastic international response (readers on 3 continents attempting to find local ingredients to make their own version of the pimiento cheese sandwich, yours truly included), it's now turned into a Sandwich Party.
I had a very busy weekend, what with narrowly escaping death-by-falling-giant-tree-branch, cycling in perpetual head winds, catching up on research and gardening hours and getting lost on my way to a friend's house, and missed the official 'Sunday night' deadline. So once more, I thank my good star for being on the other side of the date-change line and submit late, yet on time. ;)
ingredients:
- strawberries, one or two punnets
- sugar, a handful
- balsamic vinegar
- brioche bread, two thick slices
- 3 eggs
- 1/4 - 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- nutmeg
1. Cut the strawberries in halves or quarters, toss in a bowl with a little sugar and balsamic vinegar, cover and leave in the fridge a few hours/overnight.
2. Beat the eggs, milk, vanilla and a little grated nutmeg. Soak brioche in the mix until completely absorbed (3-4 minutes)
3. Heat a pan over medium heat with a little butter, add the soaked brioche, cook until golden on both sides, turning once.
4. Serve with the balsamic strawberries, a side of fruit or some fresh cream.
5. Enjoy a decadent, yet healthy (if you go the no-cream route) breakie sandwich!

Exceptions à la règle
Je me suis arrêtée au marché de Riccarton House en chemin vers l'université. Il ne me reste qu'une semaine à Christchurch et je suis toujours en pleine opération 'vider les armoires', mais je me suis fait plaisir avec des oeufs frais, des asperges et un pain brioche. De quoi donner un peu de substance à mes restants! (quiche aux asperges: restant de farine, restant de crème, restant de parmesan, restant de beurre)
Encore une heure et demi le nez dans les Recueils de Droit de la Famille, le temps de terminer mon rapport sur l'approche canadienne (quant aux exceptions au principe de retour immédiat dans les cas d'enlèvement international d'enfant par un parent), une demi-heure de vélo casse-cou (avec ce vent), et un samedi terminé en beauté avec quiche et jardinage (9 heures à faire d'ici vendredi).
