July, 2nd edition (a.k.a. Sandwich Party: the Lyttelton Burger edition)

half-a-sandwich, originally uploaded by Frédérique in NZ.

Of course, what brings me back to writing this blog had to be a food-related, blog-based event, didn't it?

Life in Lyttelton has been busy and quite happy, without much time to write or things to write about - although I should mention that when Mary & Marc come back and reclaim their house on August 5th, I will be moving to a whole new flat, away from my ever-so-slightly-psycho flatmate. The rent will be less expensive and, most marvellous of all, the new house comes with a cat, a sunny practical kitchen and a good little garden.

But back to food and blogging: the Sandwich Party is back! This year again, the rules are simple. To quote Jane from Hillbilly, Please "Sandwiches can be made with any ingredients you’d like. You don’t even have to make the sandwich yourself. We don’t care."

What better excuse to walk down (and down and down... this is getting hard on my knees) to this morning's Farmers' Market and have a deeeelicioussss Lyttelton Burger. Burgers are a kind of sandwich, right? I think so too. And such a burger, with kiwi bacon (meatier than the North American streaky bacon), aioli mayonaise, pickled red onions and pickled carrots, and a few leaves of fancy lettuce, on a slightly grilled almost-foccacia-like bun, certainly deserves an entry in the Sandwich Party.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't actually eat this most awesome burger-look-alike sandwich this morning. I'm trying to be good and curb my spending on take-away food (and those other small expenses so easy to forget about, as well), and having a car for the last few weeks, practicality aside, has really put a dent in my budget. But I looked at the burger sandwich, I smelled the yummy cooking bacon, and I reminisced about just how good it was last time I had it - which is when the picture was taken. I'll have it again, I'm sure, just not this week.

So I'm really taking advantage of the We don't care guideline, with a sandwich that stretches the definition of a sandwich, that I didn't make myself, and that I didn't even eat this weekend.

(why half-a-sandwich? this burger's big! ...the other half was enjoyed by my friend Agate)

My more labour-intensive, summery efforts for the first edition.

My arteries are constricting with delight just looking at that lovely creation. You have more willpower than I, that's for sure.

Wow. I find it really hard to believe that you resisted the temptation to eat it.

I ate the one in the photo, but I somehow did resist the urge to buy one this weekend :)
